West Tripura is the state’s political, economic, and administrative heartland, anchored by the capital city of Agartala. It houses vital governing institutions, including the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Civil Secretariat, Raj Bhavan, and the High Court of Tripura.
Geographically, it lies along the Howrah River basin, sharing an international border with Bangladesh to the north and west, while bordering Khowai district to the east and Sepahijala to the south. Historically ruled by the Manikya dynasty, which shifted the royal capital here in 1838 and built Ujjayanta Palace. Bengali is the major language spoken by the people, while Kokborok and other tribal languages are also widely used. Culturally, it blends indigenous Tripuri and Bengali traditions, celebrated through festivals like Kharchi Puja, Garia Puja and Durga Puja.
